What is IntimaWave?

IntimaWave is the pelvic floor treatment mode of the Fotona StarFormer PRO, a CE-marked magnetic muscle stimulation system manufactured by Fotona in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Fotona has been developing precision medical and aesthetic devices for over 60 years.

During an IntimaWave session, you sit fully clothed in a specially designed treatment chair. Magnetic applicators built into the seat and backrest generate high-intensity magnetic pulses that reach the pelvic floor muscles, causing them to contract and strengthen.

The technology is called HITS, which stands for High-Intensity Tesla Stimulation. Unlike electrical stimulation devices that require skin contact with electrodes, IntimaWave works through your clothing using magnetic fields. The magnetic pulses pass through the skin without acting on its pain receptors, which is why most people find the treatment comfortable rather than painful.

Each session triggers thousands of supramaximal contractions. These are muscle contractions that are stronger than anything you could achieve voluntarily, even with perfect Kegel technique. Over a course of treatment, these contractions build strength, restore neuromuscular control and strengthen the entire pelvic floor area.

The StarFormer PRO Advantage

3.0 Tesla HITS magnetic muscle stimulation for clinical pelvic floor rehabilitation

Fotona StarFormer PRO with IntimaWave 3.0 Tesla pelvic floor strengthening system at Pink Laser Clinics Doncaster

Medical-Grade Magnetic Muscle Stimulation

Most pelvic floor clinics use devices operating at 2.5 Tesla or below. That works for some patients, but not all.

Our Fotona StarFormer PRO operates at 3.0 Tesla, delivering 20% greater magnetic field intensity than the most commonly available alternative. At this intensity, the magnetic field reaches the sacral nerve roots (S2 to S4) responsible for bladder and bowel control, enabling true neuromodulation alongside muscle strengthening.

The result is broader clinical coverage, deeper nerve activation, and published outcomes across all types of urinary incontinence, not just stress incontinence alone.

HITS Technology

High-Intensity Tesla Stimulation

Magnetic pulses depolarise motor neurons in the pelvic floor, triggering supramaximal contractions that recruit 100% of accessible muscle fibres. This level of activation is physically impossible through voluntary Kegel exercise. The published Talaber et al. (2021) review of 87 clinical studies confirmed HITS activates both slow-twitch and fast-twitch fibres simultaneously.

Sacral Nerve Neuromodulation

S2 to S4 nerve root activation at 3.0 Tesla

At 3.0 Tesla, the magnetic field penetrates deep enough to reach the sacral nerve roots that control bladder and bowel function. This retrains the neural pathways governing continence, which is why IntimaWave treats urge and mixed incontinence effectively, not just stress incontinence. Lower-Tesla devices may not reach these deeper structures.

Dual-Channel Applicators

Seat and back applicators operate simultaneously for 3D pelvic floor and lumbar activation. Quattro mode extends to four applicators treating pelvic floor, sacral region, lumbar and core muscles in a single session.

Fully Clothed, Pain-Free

Magnetic stimulation bypasses cutaneous skin receptors entirely. No undressing, no probes, no preparation. You sit in your own clothing for 20 to 30 minutes, then resume your day immediately with zero downtime.

Published Clinical Evidence

HITS technology is supported by 87 peer-reviewed studies. A 2022 Journal of Clinical Medicine study specifically validated 3.0 Tesla FMS as safe and effective for all types of female urinary incontinence including stress, urge and mixed.

Manufactured by Fotona d.o.o., Ljubljana, Slovenia. Precision medical and aesthetic energy devices since 1964. CE Class IIa Medical Device. The StarFormer PRO is the only 3.0 Tesla functional magnetic stimulation platform available at an aesthetic clinic in Melbourne.

Why Patients Choose Pink Laser Clinics for Pelvic Floor Treatment

Pink Laser Clinics is one of the only aesthetic clinics in Melbourne operating the Fotona StarFormer PRO at 3.0 Tesla. Most clinics offering pelvic floor strengthening use devices operating at 2.5 Tesla or below. That 20% difference in magnetic field intensity allows IntimaWave to reach deeper into the pelvic floor muscles. This is a device-specification difference, not a promise of a particular result.

We chose this platform because the magnetic-stimulation evidence base is genuine. A 2021 review in the Journal of the Laser and Health Academy examined this class of high-intensity magnetic stimulation across pelvic floor rehabilitation, muscle strengthening, pain and motor recovery, and describes how the stimulation recruits muscle fibres that are difficult to activate through exercise alone. We treat that as evidence for this class of device rather than proof of a specific outcome, and we also see published case work using the StarFormer PRO itself.

This is not a one-size-fits-all chair session. Every treatment plan is built around your condition, your history and your goals. Book a free consultation and we will walk you through exactly what to expect.

What to Expect

How Often?

Most protocols involve 2 to 3 sessions per week. Your clinician will recommend the optimal frequency based on your specific condition. Sessions are spaced to allow your pelvic floor muscles to recover and rebuild between treatments, similar to how you would structure a strength training program.

How Long?

Each IntimaWave session lasts 20 to 30 minutes depending on your treatment protocol. Pelvic floor strengthening is set across a course, usually two to three times a week, and your clinician tailors the number of sessions to your condition after assessing you. Many people notice improvement across the course rather than overnight.

Feels Like?

You will feel rhythmic contractions in your pelvic floor muscles. The sensation is unusual at first but not painful. Most patients describe it as a strong pulsing or vibrating feeling. Intensity starts low and is gradually increased to your comfort level. Magnetic stimulation is inherently less uncomfortable than electrical stimulation because the pulses bypass skin sensory receptors. Most patients relax or read during their session.

How It Works

The Magnetic Pulse

The IntimaWave chair contains a stimulation coil in the seat. When an alternating electric current flows through this coil, it generates a powerful pulsing magnetic field at 3.0 Tesla. This magnetic field passes harmlessly through your clothing and skin to reach the motor neurons deep within your pelvic floor.

Nerve Activation

When the magnetic field reaches your pelvic floor motor neurons, it induces a small electrical current along the nerve fibres. This is called depolarisation, and it is the same process your brain uses to tell your muscles to move. The nerve fires an action potential that travels to the neuromuscular junction, releasing a chemical message that triggers the muscle to contract.

Supramaximal Contractions

During voluntary Kegel exercises, your brain can only recruit a portion of your pelvic floor muscle fibres. At 3.0 Tesla, IntimaWave produces supramaximal contractions that recruit muscle fibres which are hard to activate voluntarily. A single 30 minute session generates many thousands of these contractions, far more than you could perform through focused effort in the same time.

Muscle Rebuilding

Across a course, IntimaWave is designed to build strength and neuromuscular control across the pelvic floor, including the deep fibres that are difficult to recruit through exercise alone. Repeated contractions across a course retrain muscle and nerve coordination, much as focused strength training does. Individual response varies.

Your IntimaWave Treatment Journey

Your Consultation

Every IntimaWave treatment plan begins with a free consultation at our Doncaster clinic. We discuss your symptoms, medical history and treatment goals. We assess any contraindications and determine whether IntimaWave is right for you. You leave with a personalised treatment plan including the recommended protocol, session count and frequency.

Your First Session

You arrive in comfortable clothing. No special preparation is needed. You sit in the IntimaWave treatment chair fully clothed. Your clinician positions you comfortably and begins the session at a low intensity, gradually increasing to your personal tolerance level. The whole process takes 20 to 30 minutes.

Your Treatment Course

Most protocols involve 2 to 3 sessions per week over a course of 6 to 12 sessions. Each session builds on the last, progressively strengthening your pelvic floor muscles and retraining neural pathways. There is no downtime after any session. You can drive, exercise, work and resume all normal activities immediately.

Results and Maintenance

Many people notice improvement across the course rather than overnight, and your clinician reviews your progress as you go rather than promising a number. Maintenance sessions every 4 to 6 weeks may be recommended to sustain results, as the pelvic floor will gradually weaken without ongoing stimulation, like any muscle.

IntimaWave Pelvic Floor Treatments, Questions We're Asked the Most.

IntimaWave is the pelvic floor treatment mode of the Fotona StarFormer PRO. It is a specialised chair with built-in magnetic applicators that generate high-intensity Tesla stimulation (HITS) to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. You sit fully clothed in the chair while magnetic pulses trigger thousands of muscle contractions, rebuilding pelvic floor strength without pain, needles or surgery.

The IntimaWave chair generates a pulsing magnetic field at 3.0 Tesla. This magnetic field passes through your clothing and skin to reach the motor neurons in your pelvic floor. It induces electrical currents in these nerves, causing them to fire and produce strong, coordinated muscle contractions. These supramaximal contractions are stronger than anything you can produce voluntarily, and over a course of treatment they rebuild muscle mass, improve neuromuscular control and retrain the nerve pathways that govern bladder and bowel function.

Both devices use magnetic stimulation to strengthen the pelvic floor. The key differences are field strength (IntimaWave operates at 3.0 Tesla versus Emsella's 2.5 Tesla, around a 20% higher magnetic intensity), applicator design (IntimaWave uses a seat-and-back applicator, while Emsella uses a single seat applicator), and manufacturer heritage (Fotona has over 60 years of European medical device manufacturing experience). Whether that difference matters depends on your symptoms, which is why we start with an assessment. IntimaWave is an Emsella alternative in Melbourne, distinguished by its higher field strength, seat-and-back applicator and HITS technology.

A typical IntimaWave treatment course is 6 to 12 sessions, depending on your condition. Sessions are scheduled 2 to 3 times per week. Some patients notice improvements within the first few sessions, but a full course is recommended for optimal results. Your clinician will recommend a personalised treatment plan during your free consultation.

Published research shows that treatment results can persist for several months after completing a course. However, like any muscle, the pelvic floor will gradually weaken without ongoing stimulation. Most patients benefit from maintenance sessions every 4 to 6 weeks to sustain their results long-term. Your clinician will discuss a maintenance plan tailored to your needs.

Most people find IntimaWave comfortable. You feel strong, rhythmic muscle contractions rather than pain, as your pelvic floor muscles contract. The intensity starts low and is gradually increased to your personal comfort level. Magnetic stimulation passes through the skin without acting on its pain receptors, so it is generally less uncomfortable than electrical stimulation. Most patients find the treatment comfortable and some read or relax during their session.

Yes. The magnetic-stimulation evidence base for this class of device is genuine and growing. A 2021 review in the Journal of the Laser and Health Academy examined studies of high-intensity magnetic stimulation across pelvic floor rehabilitation, muscle strengthening, pain and motor recovery, and describes how the stimulation recruits muscle fibres that are difficult to activate through exercise alone. That review covers this class of device rather than the StarFormer PRO in isolation, so we treat it as category evidence rather than proof of a specific outcome. There is also published case work using the StarFormer PRO itself, including a 2022 single case report in which an older patient with incomplete bladder emptying saw their residual urine improve across a course; a single case describes what happened for one person, not what typically happens. Individual response varies, which is why we begin with an assessment.

Yes. Pelvic floor weakness affects men too, particularly after prostate surgery, and IntimaWave is used for the male pelvic floor on the same principle. It is also used to support men's pelvic floor function relating to erectile and sexual wellbeing. It is not a standalone cure for erectile difficulty, which can have several causes, so we work alongside your doctor or urologist rather than in place of them. Pelvic floor health is not gender-specific, and our clinic welcomes patients of all genders. A consultation confirms whether it suits your situation.

IntimaWave is widely used for post-partum pelvic floor rehabilitation. You can begin treatment once you have been cleared by your GP or obstetrician, which is typically from 6 weeks after a vaginal delivery and may be longer after a caesarean section. We recommend discussing your readiness during your free consultation.

If you have a copper IUD, IntimaWave is generally considered safe. However, if you have a pacemaker, defibrillator or other active electronic implant, IntimaWave is not suitable because the magnetic field may interfere with the device. Metal implants in the pelvic region (such as hip replacements) should also be discussed with your clinician before treatment. We assess all contraindications during your free consultation.

Treatment costs vary depending on your individual treatment plan and the number of sessions recommended. We offer a free consultation where we assess your condition and discuss a personalised treatment plan including pricing. Book your free consultation to get started.

IntimaWave and Kegel exercises work on the same principle (strengthening the pelvic floor through muscle contraction), but IntimaWave achieves a level of muscle activation that Kegel exercises cannot. Magnetic stimulation produces supramaximal contractions that recruit muscle fibres which are hard to activate voluntarily. During voluntary Kegel exercises, most people activate only a fraction of their pelvic floor muscles, and many perform the exercises incorrectly. IntimaWave is not necessarily a replacement for Kegels. It can be used alongside physiotherapy as part of a comprehensive pelvic floor rehabilitation plan.

IntimaWave is used for all types of urinary incontinence: stress (leakage during movement), urge (a sudden, hard-to-defer need to urinate), and mixed (a combination of both). It is also used for faecal incontinence, post-partum pelvic floor weakness, pelvic floor rehabilitation after surgery, and male pelvic floor strengthening including after prostate surgery. Whether it suits your specific situation is something your clinician will assess during your free consultation.

Yes. You remain fully clothed throughout the treatment, so menstruation does not affect the procedure. You can attend your scheduled session as normal.

Yes. IntimaWave is particularly beneficial during and after menopause, when hormonal changes cause the pelvic floor muscles to weaken and thin. Magnetic stimulation actively rebuilds muscle mass regardless of hormonal status. Published studies include pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women with positive outcomes across both groups.

Men at the StarFormer PRO: Pelvic Floor Recovery, Muscle Rebuilding and Body Sculpting

Pelvic floor treatment is marketed almost entirely to women, but men have the same muscles and the same problems, especially after prostate surgery. The StarFormer PRO treats male pelvic floor recovery, muscle rebuilding and body sculpting on one platform, fully clothed and privately. Here are the three reasons men book, and what to expect.

TightWave or Emsculpt NEO: How to Read the Body Sculpting Comparison

TightWave and Emsculpt NEO both contract your muscles far beyond what exercise can, but they are built differently. TightWave is pure magnetic muscle stimulation, focused entirely on building and toning muscle. Emsculpt NEO combines muscle stimulation with radiofrequency heating to target fat as well. Here is how to read the difference honestly.

Emsella or IntimaWave: How to Compare Pelvic Floor Chairs in Melbourne

Both the Emsella and the StarFormer PRO IntimaWave chair strengthen your pelvic floor while you sit fully clothed. The main differences are field strength and flexibility: IntimaWave runs at 3.0 Tesla with a seat-and-back applicator and settings tailored to your condition, where Emsella runs at 2.5 Tesla on a standard protocol. Here is how to read the comparison.
