Thinking about laser hair removal but not sure where to start? You are not alone. It is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in Australia, yet it is also one of the most misunderstood.
This guide covers everything you need to know before booking your first session. We explain how the technology works, what to expect, how many sessions you need, and how to look after your skin.
At Pink Laser Clinics in Doncaster, Melbourne, we use AvalancheLase® by Fotona. It is one of the most advanced laser hair removal systems available. We have been awarded Best Laser Hair Removal in Manningham for 2024 and 2025.
What Is It and How Does It Work?
Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy to target the pigment inside hair follicles. The laser heats the follicle and damages it at the root. This stops the hair from growing back.
The laser can only treat hair that is in its active growth phase. Because not all hair grows at the same time, multiple sessions are needed. Each session treats a different group of follicles.
With each treatment you will notice slower regrowth, finer hair and longer periods of smoothness. Over a full course of sessions, most clients achieve long-lasting hair reduction.
Why We Use AvalancheLase® Technology
Not all laser machines are the same. At Pink Laser Clinics we chose AvalancheLase® by Fotona for three key reasons: comfort, safety and results.

Two Wavelengths in One System
AvalancheLase® combines Alexandrite (755nm) and Nd:YAG (1064nm) lasers in a single platform. This allows us to treat all skin tones and hair types safely. We can customise settings for fine, coarse, shallow or deep hair.
Built-In Cooling for Comfort
The system features DMCâ„¢ (Dry Spray Molecular Cooling) technology. Cooling happens instantly during the laser pulse, not after. This is why many clients are surprised by how comfortable it feels, even in sensitive areas.
No ice packs. No freezing air hoses. Just controlled, intelligent cooling where it matters.
Faster Sessions with Better Coverage
Large spot sizes and high pulse frequencies allow us to treat areas quickly and evenly. This means shorter appointments, more consistent results and less skin irritation.
What Areas Can Be Treated?
We treat virtually every area of the face and body. The most popular treatment areas include:
- Underarms — from just $19 per session
- Full face, upper lip and chin
- Hollywood Brazilian and bikini line
- Full legs, half legs and inner thighs
- Full arms and half arms
- Full back and shoulders (popular for men)
- Chest and stomach
- Full body head to toe including face
We also offer combination packages. For example, Full Legs + Brazilian + Underarms is one of our most popular combos.
How Many Sessions Do You Need?
Most clients need 6 to 10 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. The exact number depends on the area being treated, hair thickness, hair colour and hormonal factors.
This is not a one-off treatment. It is a process that works with your natural hair growth cycle. Each session reduces more hair until you reach your desired result.
This is completely normal. It is how hair biology works, not a limitation of the technology.
Will You Need Maintenance Sessions?
Yes. Maintenance is a normal part of the process.
Hormones can activate new hair follicles over time. This is especially common in areas like the face, underarms and Brazilian. Most clients schedule a maintenance session every 6 to 12 months to keep results looking their best.
Think of it as upkeep, not starting again.
How to Prepare for Your Appointment
A little preparation makes a big difference to your comfort and results. Before your session:
- Shave the treatment area 24 hours beforehand
- Arrive with clean, product-free skin
- Do not apply lotions, oils, deodorant or perfume to the area
- Avoid waxing, threading or plucking for 4 weeks prior
- No tanning or fake tan for 2 weeks before your session
Clean, product-free skin allows the laser to work safely. It also helps minimise irritation during treatment.
What to Expect After Treatment
After your session, the skin may feel warm or slightly flushed. This usually settles within a few hours. To support healing:
- Avoid heat, exercise, saunas and hot showers for 24 to 48 hours
- No sun exposure or fake tan for at least 7 days
- Use gentle, fragrance-free skincare only
Many clients use our Pink Skin Care Post Laser Recovery Gel in the first few days after treatment. It is designed to calm, hydrate and support the skin barrier during recovery.
Is It Safe for All Skin Types?
Yes. One of the biggest advantages of AvalancheLase® is its safety across all skin types and tones. The dual-wavelength system allows us to adjust settings precisely for lighter and darker skin.
Many older systems could only treat light skin with dark hair. AvalancheLase® removes this limitation. We regularly treat clients across the full Fitzpatrick skin type scale.
Laser vs Waxing, Shaving and IPL
Laser vs Waxing
Waxing pulls hair from the root but does not damage the follicle. Hair grows back at full thickness within weeks. Laser treatment damages the follicle itself. Over time, hair becomes finer and stops growing back.
Laser vs Shaving
Shaving cuts hair at the surface. Regrowth appears within days, often with stubble and ingrown hairs. Laser targets the root for long-term reduction. Clients who switch from shaving to laser often notice smoother skin and fewer ingrown hairs from the first session.
Laser vs IPL
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) uses broad-spectrum light. Medical-grade laser uses a focused single wavelength. It is more precise, more powerful and more effective for permanent reduction. AvalancheLase® is a true medical-grade laser system, not an IPL device.
How Much Does Treatment Cost?
At Pink Laser Clinics, underarm treatments start from just $19 per session. Full face is $85. Hollywood Brazilian is $79. Full body head to toe including face is $599.
We offer multi-area packages and significant savings when you pre-pay for a course. Up to 50% off is available on selected pre-pay packages.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does treatment hurt?
Most clients describe it as a warm tingling sensation. AvalancheLase® DMC™ cooling makes it significantly more comfortable than older laser systems. Many clients tell us it is the first time laser felt manageable.
How long does each session take?
Small areas like underarms take just a few minutes. Larger areas like full legs take 30 to 45 minutes. Full body sessions take approximately 60 to 90 minutes.
Can I have treatment if I have dark skin?
Yes. AvalancheLase® Nd:YAG wavelength is specifically designed for safe treatment on darker skin tones.
What if I have blonde or grey hair?
Laser works best on hair with pigment. Very light blonde, grey or red hair may not respond well. Your clinician will assess suitability during your consultation.
Can I shave between sessions?
Yes. Shaving is fine between sessions. Do not wax, thread or pluck as this removes the hair root that the laser needs to target.
Is the treatment permanent?
The treatment achieves long-term hair reduction. Most clients experience 80 to 90 percent reduction after a full course. Occasional maintenance sessions keep results looking their best.
