The Anti-Ageing Guide

Eye and Lip Rejuvenation: SmoothEye and SmoothLips at Pink

The skin around the eyes and lips is the thinnest on the face. It shows change earliest: fine lines, a softening of definition, a tired look that rest does not fix. SmoothEye and SmoothLips are Fotona's non-invasive laser protocols for these zones, using controlled warmth with no needles, safe for the most sensitive skin on your face.

The periorbital zone: the face's earliest-changing skin, and the area SmoothEye treats directly.

The eye and lip zones are the face's two most watched areas. They are also the two areas that change first. The skin here is the thinnest on the face, collagen density is lower than elsewhere, and both areas are under constant movement, expression, squinting, speaking, smiling. The result is that fine lines appear earlier in these zones, that rest and hydration stop being enough sooner, and that the skin quality change here is visible at a distance in a way that texture decline on the cheeks or brow is not. SmoothEye and SmoothLips are Fotona's laser protocols for these specific zones: controlled warmth, calibrated precisely, without needles. For where these treatments sit in Pink's full anti-ageing approach, see the non-surgical facelift guide.

Why the eyes and lips age differently from the rest of the face

Facial ageing is not uniform. The eye and lip zones age differently because of where they sit structurally and what they do mechanically.

The periorbital skin, the skin around the eyes, is among the thinnest on the body. It has fewer sebaceous glands, less collagen relative to surface area, and is subject to the constant micro-movement of blinking and expression. UV exposure accumulates around the eyes (squinting, the shadow-edge of brow bone) faster than many areas of the face. The result: crow's feet appear in the mid-twenties to early thirties for most people, and under-eye laxity and fine periorbital lines develop progressively through the thirties and forties regardless of how well-maintained the rest of the face is.

The perioral zone ages by a compounding of two processes: the natural reduction in lip collagen and volume (the lip becomes thinner, the vermilion border softens), and the mechanical formation of vertical lines driven by years of lip movement. These are the lines popularly called smokers' lines, though they form in non-smokers too: they reflect the cumulative effect of perioral muscle movement on skin that has progressively less collagen to rebound with.

Topical products address neither zone at structural depth. That is what laser treats.

What does SmoothEye treat?

Crow's feet and periorbital fine lines

The fine lines that radiate from the outer eye corner are the earliest visible sign of periorbital ageing, and the zone that responds most predictably to SmoothEye. The controlled thermal effect of Er:YAG and Nd:YAG energy in the periorbital zone stimulates collagen remodelling precisely where those lines sit. Most clients notice improvement in the fine-line network after a short course.

Under-eye laxity and eyelid tightening

The lower eyelid and under-eye area involves a thinner skin profile than almost anywhere else on the face. SmoothEye's gentle heating effect addresses the laxity in this zone without the risks associated with more aggressive surface treatments. Non-ablative. No surface wound. Safe for the under-eye skin specifically.

The periorbital zone broadly

SmoothEye is not limited to the outer corner or the lower lid. The protocol covers the periorbital zone as a whole: the outer corners, the lower eyelid, the orbital rim area, and the general quality of the periorbital skin. Clients presenting with an overall tired-eye look, rather than one specific concern, often find the whole-zone approach more relevant than a targeted point treatment.

How SmoothEye works: the controlled-warmth mechanism

SmoothEye uses Er:YAG and Nd:YAG wavelengths delivered with precision handpieces safe for the periorbital zone. The energy creates a controlled thermal effect in the dermal layer: collagen fibres contract and remodel, and new collagen formation is stimulated in the weeks and months following each session.

Non-ablative means no surface is broken: there is no wound, no ablated skin, no visible injury to the surface after treatment. The result is a treatment that is safe to use near the eyes and compatible with daily activity immediately after each session. Eye shields are used throughout treatment for protection.

The response is gradual, as with all collagen-stimulating treatments. Most clients see initial improvement in skin texture and fine lines within four to six weeks of the first session, with the structural result building progressively through a course.

What does SmoothLips treat?

Vertical lip lines: smokers' lines and perioral lines

The vertical lines above and below the lips are the primary clinical application of SmoothLips. These lines form perpendicular to the lip surface, driven by years of perioral muscle movement against skin with declining collagen. SmoothLips addresses them by stimulating collagen production in the perioral zone, improving the skin's capacity to recover from repeated micro-movement. The lines soften progressively through a course.

Lip laxity and collagen rebuilding

Beyond the surface lines, SmoothLips addresses the structural collagen of the lip itself: the firmness of the lip body, the definition of the vermilion border, and the overall shape and projection that reduces as lip collagen thins. The result is a natural improvement in lip quality that does not change the shape of the lip, only its structural density and definition.

The perioral area

The zone immediately surrounding the lips, including the upper lip skin and the chin area, is treated alongside the lip itself. The perioral skin is part of the same collagen-thinning picture as the lip, and treating it as a zone rather than a boundary produces the most coherent result.

How SmoothLips works

SmoothLips combines an intraoral Er:YAG pass with an external perioral treatment. The intraoral component delivers controlled warmth from inside the lip, stimulating collagen at the mucosal layer, the same principle as the SmoothLiftin stage in Fotona 4D but specific to the lip zone. The external component treats the perioral skin surface and the outer lip border.

The intraoral stage is unique to Fotona's Er:YAG lip protocol. No needle or injectable reaches the mucosal collagen layer from the inside; no topical product does. The treatment is specific to what this laser modality can access.

Most clients describe the intraoral stage as a gentle warmth. The lip area is sensitive, and Pink uses topical gel for comfort. Anaesthesia is not routinely required.

Can SmoothEye and SmoothLips be combined?

Yes, and the combination is a natural one. Both treatments are short in duration, and for clients with concerns in both zones, running them in the same session is efficient. Pink offers the Eye and Lip Rejuvenation Package for exactly this combination.

Both SmoothEye and SmoothLips can also be added to a Fotona 4D course as zone-specific additions, for clients undergoing full-face structural work who want the eye and lip zones addressed specifically in the same session or course. Your clinician advises on the appropriate combination and session structure at consultation.

What to expect: sessions, comfort, and results

Sessions: Most clients need three to four sessions in a course, spaced approximately four to six weeks apart. The eye and lip zones have a shorter course requirement than the full Fotona 4D face-and-neck protocol because the treatment zones are smaller and the tissue response in the periorbital and perioral skin is precise.

Comfort: SmoothEye is generally well-tolerated in the periorbital zone. SmoothLips involves the more sensitive perioral tissue; topical gel is used and most clients manage comfortably. Individual sensitivity varies. Your clinician adjusts the session in response to your feedback.

After treatment: No ablative wound, no surface breakage. Mild warmth or redness in the treated zone is common and typically settles within hours. Return to normal activity on the same day.

Results timeline: Initial improvement in fine lines and skin texture typically begins within four to six weeks of the first session. The structural collagen response builds through the course and continues for two to three months after the final session. Most clients notice the clearest result at the six-to-eight-week mark after completing a course.

Who eye and lip laser suits, and who it does not

Suited to: Anyone with periorbital fine lines, crow's feet, or under-eye skin laxity. Anyone with vertical perioral lines, lip border softening, or general lip-quality decline. Clients across all Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI. Clients who want to address these zones without needles or fillers. Clients adding zone-specific treatment to a Fotona 4D course.

Requires clinical assessment for: Active periorbital infections or skin conditions at the treatment site; recent aesthetic procedures in the eye or lip zone; certain eye conditions (your clinician screens at consultation). These are not absolute exclusions in all cases; they require a clinical read before proceeding.

Not suited to: Clients expecting the same kind of immediate visible result as filler or anti-wrinkle injections. SmoothEye and SmoothLips are collagen-building treatments; results develop over weeks and months, not days. If the primary need is a fast volume correction in the under-eye area, an injectable approach is a different starting point, with a different mechanism and result type.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is laser safe near the eyes?

Yes, with appropriate protection. SmoothEye is designed for the periorbital zone specifically, using wavelengths and energy settings calibrated for the thinner, more sensitive skin around the eyes. Eye shields are used throughout treatment to protect the eyes themselves. The clinician is trained in periorbital laser protocol and positions the handpiece precisely. Non-ablative treatment means no surface wound and minimal disruption to the periorbital skin after treatment.

How is SmoothEye different from filler for under-eye?

They address different concerns via different mechanisms. Under-eye filler adds volume to the hollow or tear trough, producing an immediate reduction in the shadow-depth that reads as under-eye bags or dark circles. SmoothEye stimulates collagen in the periorbital skin, addressing skin laxity, fine lines, and periorbital skin quality. For clients whose primary concern is skin texture, crow's feet, and eyelid tightening rather than volume correction, SmoothEye is the laser-specific tool. For significant volume hollowing, filler is the relevant tool. The two are not competing; they address different aspects of the same area.

How many sessions are needed for visible results?

Most clients see initial improvement after two sessions, with the clearest result at the completion of a three-to-four session course. Individual response varies, and your clinician assesses progress after each session. Some clients with early-stage concerns see meaningful change from a single session; clients with more significant periorbital or perioral laxity typically benefit from the full course before assessing.

Is there any downtime?

Minimal. SmoothEye and SmoothLips are non-ablative: no surface wound, no ablated skin. Mild redness or warmth in the treated zone is common in the hours after treatment and typically settles the same day. Most clients return to normal activity immediately. No specific post-treatment downtime is required, though sun protection on treated areas is advised.

Can SmoothEye or SmoothLips be combined with Fotona 4D?

Yes. Both are frequently added to a Fotona 4D course as zone-specific additions in the same session. The Eye and Lip Rejuvenation Package combines both protocols, and can run alongside or separately from a full Fotona 4D course. Your clinician advises on the combination that matches your concern at consultation.
