Lip skin, treated at the depth its collagen lives

SmoothLips is a non-ablative laser treatment for the lip area. Calm, controlled warmth prompts the lip to build its own collagen, smoothing the fine surface lines and renewing the lip's own definition. Nothing is added.

The treatment

A laser treatment for the lip

SmoothLips treats the lip area itself: the surface of the lips, and the fine vertical lines that gather in the skin above the upper lip. It is a non-ablative laser treatment, smoothing the lip-skin's texture and softening those fine lines.

It does this with a Fotona Er:YAG laser, used in what Fotona calls SMOOTH mode: a precisely controlled delivery of warmth into the lip-skin. Because it is non-ablative, the surface stays intact. There are no needles and no incisions; the treatment acts in the layers beneath.

How it works

What ages the lip

The skin of the lip is among the thinnest on the body, and it never rests. Talking and expression move it many thousands of times a day; it carries little of the oil-gland support that cushions the rest of the face; and it sits exposed to sunlight day in and day out. So the lip area is often the first place a softening of structure shows: fine vertical lines that gather in the skin above the upper lip, a lip surface that has lost some of its smoothness, and a vermilion border, the lip's defining edge, that has softened with the years.

SMOOTH mode treats that loss at its source. The laser delivers its energy as a sequence of sub-second pulses, each one adding a little warmth without letting heat build at the surface. The result is even, controlled heating a fraction of a millimetre down, in the layer of the lip-skin where collagen is held.

Warmth at that depth prompts the lip to do two things: to remodel the collagen it already holds, and to begin synthesising new collagen of its own, a process called neocollagenesis. Across a course of sessions, the lip-skin smooths and firms because it has rebuilt its own structure.

Nothing is added; the change is the lip's own.

What it treats

What SmoothLips treats

The lip area shows age in specific ways: fine vertical lines that gather in the skin above the upper lip, a lip surface that has lost some of its smoothness, and a vermilion border whose definition has softened. All of these are concerns of the lip-skin's quality and structure, and that is what SmoothLips treats.

SmoothLips treats them by improving the lip's skin itself, rather than injecting volume from outside the lip. That is what makes its result a natural one: nothing is added to your face, and nothing about it is altered; the lip is simply in better condition. The shape of your mouth stays the shape of your mouth; what improves is its skin.

The change comes gradually, session by session, so the lip looks progressively fresher rather than suddenly different. For many people that is the appeal of SmoothLips: a real, visible result, on the lip they already have.

What to expect

The session, and the days that follow

A session is mostly preparation. The lip area is numbed first, which takes twenty to thirty minutes; the SmoothLips treatment itself is short, usually five to ten minutes. With the numbing done, the laser feels like little more than warmth passing across the lip.

Most people notice a touch of swelling and warmth in the lip on the day, settling over the next day or two. The lip area can feel mildly tender for a day or so; this is the lip-skin reacting to the controlled warmth and beginning to renew. There is no incision and no needle, and the recovery shows mostly to you.

SmoothLips is at its fullest as a course rather than in a single session. A typical plan covers four to six sessions, set three to six weeks apart; your clinician matches the number and the timing to your skin. Across the course the lip-skin builds collagen of its own, and the result develops steadily and continues to develop for a time after the final treatment as the new collagen matures. A single session is a real treatment in its own right; the recommended course is what gives the fullest result.

Why Pink

Why book SmoothLips at Pink

The lip is one of the most expressive parts of the face, and treating it well asks for an experienced hand. At Pink, SmoothLips is in the hands of the same two senior clinicians who lead the eye-area work, Porsha and Stephy. They examine your skin and set the plan themselves, and they are the ones who carry it out. Many clients have SmoothEye and SmoothLips as a pair, treated together in clinic; either also stands on its own. You can meet Porsha and Stephy on the clinicians page.

SmoothLips also suits every skin type. Pink calibrates the treatment for the tone and condition of each person's skin, and holds every Fitzpatrick type to a single standard of care.

Good to know

Frequently Asked Questions

Does SmoothLips hurt? +
The lip area is numbed for twenty to thirty minutes before the treatment begins, so most people feel little more than a sense of warmth as the laser passes across the lip. The treatment itself is short, usually five to ten minutes.
Is laser safe on the lip? +
Yes. SmoothLips is non-ablative, so the lip's surface stays intact; the treatment is precisely controlled and delivered at the depth where collagen is held, a fraction of a millimetre down. At Pink it is carried out by senior clinicians experienced in working on the delicate skin of the face. Any concern is worth raising at your consultation.
Is there any swelling afterwards? +
Most people notice a touch of swelling and warmth in the lip on the day, settling over the next day or two. The lip area can feel mildly tender for a day or so; that is the lip-skin reacting to the controlled warmth and beginning to renew.
Will SmoothLips make my lips look fuller? +
Slightly, yes, because the lip-skin rebuilds its own collagen, and a course can give the lip a gentle, natural fullness. The shape of your mouth stays the shape of your mouth; what improves is the lip's own skin. If a more pronounced volume change is what you are looking for, SmoothLips is not the treatment for that, and your clinician will tell you so honestly at your consultation.
How many sessions will I need? +
A typical plan covers four to six sessions, three to six weeks apart. The exact number and the spacing are decided by your clinician, to suit your skin. A single session is a real treatment in its own right; some clients have one to see how the lip-skin responds before booking the course.
Is SmoothLips safe for darker skin? +
Yes. The non-ablative SMOOTH mode suits every skin type, and Pink calibrates the treatment to the tone and condition of each person's skin, to one standard of care.
Can I have SmoothEye and SmoothLips together? +
Yes, and many clients do. SmoothEye and SmoothLips are the natural Fotona SMOOTH-mode pair: the same approach, applied to the two delicate areas. You can have either on its own or both treated in one visit; your clinician will plan the sessions to suit your skin.
How soon will I see results? +
SmoothLips works gradually. It prompts the lip's skin to build collagen of its own, over the weeks between sessions and the months that follow, so the result develops steadily across the course rather than appearing at once.
How long do the results last? +
The collagen the lip-skin builds is its own, and the improvement holds well, but ageing does continue. Many people return for an occasional session once their course is complete, to keep the lip-skin where they want it; your clinician can advise on timing.
