Benign skin lesion removal
Seborrhoeic Keratosis Removal Melbourne
Clean laser removal of the raised, waxy brown growths that come with age. Often called age warts, they are harmless, and the Fotona Er:YAG laser lifts them precisely, usually in one or two sessions.
What is a seborrhoeic keratosis?
A seborrhoeic keratosis is a raised, waxy growth that looks almost stuck onto the skin, usually tan to dark brown. They appear with age and sun exposure, most often on the face, chest, back and hands, and many people develop more than one. You might know them by their everyday names: age warts, senile warts, or barnacles.
They are completely benign. They can itch or catch on clothing, and a lot of people simply do not like how they look, which is reason enough to have them removed.
Not a viral wart, not a flat spot.
Not a viral wart. Despite the nickname, seborrhoeic keratoses are not the contagious warts you get on hands and feet. They are not caused by a virus, and they cannot be passed on.
Not a flat age spot. If your mark is flat and sits level with the skin, it is pigmentation rather than a keratosis. Flat sun spots and freckles are treated on our Pigmentation page.
Lifted cleanly, in passes.
The Er:YAG laser removes a keratosis layer by layer, lifting the raised, waxy tissue while keeping the heat to the skin around it low. Because it works so precisely at the surface, it tends to leave a cleaner result than freezing, with less risk of a pale or dark mark afterwards, which matters most on deeper skin tones. Most keratoses are cleared in one or two sessions, with the skin healing over a week or so and any pinkness settling after that.
Harmless, and we still look closely.
Seborrhoeic keratoses are benign. Once in a while, one can resemble something that deserves a closer look, so if a growth is very dark, changing, or unusual, we will ask you to have it checked before we treat it. It is a small, sensible step, and it is the right one.
Wherever they appear.
Seborrhoeic keratoses turn up most on the face, chest, back and hands, and we treat them across all of these, including the more visible areas, with the care they need.

Before you book
Is a seborrhoeic keratosis dangerous?
No, they are benign. Just occasionally one can look like something that should be checked, so if a growth is very dark, changing or unusual, we will ask you to have it looked at before we treat it.
Is it a wart? Can I catch it or pass it on?
No. Despite the age-wart nickname, a seborrhoeic keratosis is not a viral wart. It is not caused by a virus, it is not contagious, and you cannot pass it to anyone.
Is this the same as an age spot or freckle?
No. Age spots and freckles are flat and sit level with the skin, which makes them pigmentation, treated on our Pigmentation page. A keratosis is raised and waxy, which is what we treat here.
How many sessions will I need?
Most keratoses are cleared in one or two sessions. Thicker or larger ones can take a little longer, and we will tell you what to expect at consultation.
Will it scar?
Because the laser is precise and gentle on the surrounding skin, most heal with little to no mark. Some pinkness while the skin settles is normal, and we guide the aftercare.
Will it grow back?
A growth we remove does not return at that spot. New keratoses can still appear elsewhere over time, as they tend to with age, but the ones we treat are gone.
Is laser safe for darker skin tones?
Yes. The Er:YAG laser is precise and leaves little heat in the surrounding skin, which gives it a lower risk of a pale or dark mark than freezing. Settings are calibrated to your skin at consultation.
Is it covered by Medicare?
Cosmetic removal of benign seborrhoeic keratoses is not covered by Medicare or private health. We will set out the cost clearly when we plan your treatment.
