The Hair Removal Guide
How Many Laser Hair Removal Sessions Do You Need?
Most clients see 80 to 90 per cent permanent reduction in 6 to 8 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Hormonal areas may need more. Pink uses industry-standard ranges as a guide, then calibrates the real plan to your hair response from your first session forward.
Most clients see 80 to 90 per cent permanent reduction after a full course of 6 to 8 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. The exact number depends on the area being treated, your skin tone, your hair type, and your hormones. Face and hormonal areas may need more. Underarms and legs often finish in the lower half of the range. Your clinician calibrates the plan to your response from the first session forward. Maintenance touch-ups once or twice a year keep the result lasting.
Session Count by Treatment Area
Industry standards quote the following ranges for a full course. Use them as a pre-treatment guide. Your clinician will calibrate the real number once you start, based on how your hair is responding.
| Treatment Area | Sessions for a Full Course |
|---|---|
| Underarms | 6 to 8 |
| Brazilian / Bikini Line | 6 to 10 |
| Face (upper lip, chin, sideburns) | 6 to 12 |
| Legs (half or full) | 6 to 10 |
| Back / Chest | 8 to 12 |
| Arms (half or full) | 6 to 10 |
Until you start your series, this is a guide. Once you get started, we will know how you are responding.
Pink's clinicians calibrate the real plan from your first session forward. Where the table sets a range, your clinician sets the number.
Why Hair Grows in Cycles
Hair grows in three phases: anagen (active growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (rest). Only follicles in the anagen phase respond to laser, because that is when the follicle is full of pigmented hair connected to the blood supply. At any given moment, only a percentage of hair across your body is in anagen. A single session catches that percentage. The next session catches the percentage that has moved into anagen since the last visit.
The cycle length is why sessions are spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. The gap matches the average hair growth cycle for most areas. Underarms and bikini cycle every 4 to 6 weeks. Face cycles faster, around 3 to 4 weeks. Legs cycle slower, 6 to 8 weeks. Spacing sessions to match the cycle catches the maximum number of follicles in anagen each time. Shorter intervals do not accelerate results because the follicles have not moved back into active growth yet. Longer intervals do not lose progress, but they slow the total time to result.
Over six to eight sessions across these intervals, the laser eventually reaches most of the follicles in the treated area. That is why the course works.
What Affects How Many Sessions You'll Need
Five factors shape the count for your specific course:
Your skin tone. Darker tones often need the same number of sessions as fairer tones, but the wavelength selected affects how each session performs. The Nd:YAG laser at 1064nm is the choice for darker tones. See our guide on whether laser hair removal works on dark skin for the full breakdown.
Your hair type. Coarse, dark hair responds best because the pigment absorbs the laser efficiently. Fine, light, or grey hair responds less well and may need more sessions, or may not respond to laser at all. Hair colour matters more than skin colour for follicle response.
The area being treated. Face cycles faster than body, so face sessions are usually spaced closer (every 4 weeks rather than 6). Back, chest, and full legs are larger areas with more hair density and may need a longer course.
Hormones. Hormonal patterns can reactivate dormant follicles or shift hair patterns mid-course. Common examples include perimenopause, pregnancy, thyroid changes, and Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS, formerly known as PCOS). Your clinician will adjust the plan based on what you are seeing.
Adherence to the schedule. Skipping sessions or stretching the intervals does not reset progress. It does extend the total time to result. The number stays the same; the timeline expands.
What Changes Across the Course
A general arc, not a guarantee:
After 1 to 2 sessions. Less density. Hairs that grew through the cycle since the first session shed and do not return.
After 3 to 4 sessions. Noticeably finer regrowth. The remaining hair is thinner, lighter, and slower to grow back.
After 5 to 6 sessions. Most clients are at 60 to 80 per cent reduction. Shaving frequency drops sharply.
After 7 to 8 sessions. 80 to 90 per cent permanent reduction for most clients. The course is typically complete for underarms and legs. Face, Brazilian, and hormonal areas may need an additional 1 to 4 sessions to reach the same result.
After the course, most clients have one or two maintenance sessions a year to keep the result stable. Some clients never need maintenance. Hormonal changes can trigger new follicle growth, in which case a maintenance session restores the result.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment
Your first appointment at Pink begins with a free consultation. There is no obligation to book a treatment on the same day.
Your clinician reviews your medical history, any medications that affect skin sensitivity, recent sun exposure, and your hair-removal history. The area you want treated is examined in person. Your Fitzpatrick type is assessed. Your clinician will sketch out a likely course length based on the area, your hair, and your skin.
Pink offers three ways to begin: a single session, a package priced for a full course, or a customised plan that combines areas and pacing to suit. Single sessions cost more per visit and are never refused. Packages bring the per-session price down for clients ready to commit to the full course. Customised plans suit clients with specific timelines or multiple areas to coordinate.
Whichever path suits, your clinician will walk you through the cost, the spacing of sessions, and the expected outcome before any booking is made.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many sessions does laser hair removal take?
Most clients complete a full course in 6 to 8 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. The exact number depends on the area, your skin tone, your hair type, and your hormones. Face and hormonal areas may need more. Your clinician calibrates the real plan based on how your hair is responding from the first session forward.
How long does each session take?
Underarms take about 5 minutes. Bikini and Brazilian, around 10 minutes. Half legs, 15 minutes. Full body sessions take around an hour. Sessions feel warm rather than painful, thanks to integrated cooling in Pink's handpiece.
When will I start seeing results?
Most clients notice less hair density after the first or second session. Hairs that grew through the cycle since the previous session shed and do not return. By session three or four, regrowth is noticeably finer and slower. By session five or six, shaving frequency drops sharply.
Can I skip a session or push it back?
Yes, without losing progress. Skipping a session does not reset the course. It does extend the total timeline, because the hairs that were ready for that session move into the next dormant phase and have to wait until they cycle back into active growth.
Do I need maintenance after the course?
Most clients have one or two maintenance sessions a year to keep the result stable. Some clients never need maintenance. Hormonal changes can trigger new follicle growth, in which case a maintenance session restores the result.
Why does the face need more sessions than the legs?
Face hair cycles faster than body hair, which means each session catches a smaller percentage of follicles than a body session does. Face hair is also more often hormonally influenced, which can introduce new growth mid-course. Both factors extend the typical face course beyond a typical leg course.
Does laser hair removal work on PMOS (formerly PCOS) or hormonal hair?
Yes. Hormonal patterns can extend the number of sessions required and may need ongoing maintenance to keep results stable. Pink's clinicians build the plan around hormonal cycles. We recommend managing the hormonal side of PMOS with your GP in parallel with treatment.
Do I need more sessions if I have darker skin?
Skin tone does not change the session count significantly. Hair type, area, and hormones have more influence on the number of sessions you'll need. See our guide on whether laser hair removal works on dark skin for more on wavelength selection and Fitzpatrick assessment.
How many sessions until I can stop shaving entirely?
Most clients shave very rarely after session five or six. By the end of a full course, 80 to 90 per cent of follicles in the treated area are permanently reduced. Shaving still happens occasionally for the remaining hair, especially around hormonal cycles.
