We know how much acne hurts while it is active, and we can see what it leaves behind in the eyes of the scar patient at her first consultation. A particular sadness sits there, the kind that says without saying it, I have to fix something awful I never asked for, something I did my best to keep away.
Hiding it was never really possible. Light finds the texture, and no number of layers of makeup does her any justice. The covering becomes its own quiet exhaustion, and still it does not work.
Repairing the skin asks something of her too, but it is a different kind of hard, the kind that feels like progress. Watching the skin come back is accomplished and satisfying in a way that covering it never was.
Under all of it is her own face. The work gives it back.
