A woman crouching in a long-sleeve bodysuit and trainers, athletic and poised, in black and white.

Free again.

She walks in smiling, comfortable in her body. By winter she has done a series, or she is well into one, and her body is stronger, and she moves more freely for it. It is a change she feels more than shows, and she feels it in every step.

She walks in happy and confident, comfortable in her body. She has come to look after the part of herself that ages first and quietest, the interior strength a woman spends for years without ever seeing it spent, and she made that decision early, on her own.

In autumn she was the one who felt the small thing on the trampoline. The tickle, the smallest leak, the quiet question that came after it, I'm here already? She had not expected the body's interior to report in this early, and she arrived a little ahead of when she thought she would.

By winter, the report has changed.

She has done a series now, or she is well into one, and her body has answered the way muscle answers effort, by getting stronger. It does not take long. The change comes soon, and not in the mirror but in the movement. Her step is different. She moves more freely. The trampoline is a trampoline again, not a risk she weighs before she climbs on. The sneeze is just a sneeze. The second kilometre of the run is not the one she pays for.

The strength came back, and with it the not having to think about it.

What has changed is hers to feel, not to show. She knows it in how she stands and how she moves, and in how little she now thinks about a body she had quietly begun to manage.

That is the freedom of it, and freedom is the right word. Her time feels more her own. She moves through the ordinary day differently, the lifting and the carrying and the running and the playing, because she is no longer keeping half an eye on her own body, braced for the small failure. She is in control of it again. Not a smaller waist, not a number, none of what the marketing of bodies usually promises. The plainer, larger thing: a body she can stop watching.

The cold months are when this strength gets built, quietly and out of sight, and hers shows in the only place it ever could, in the way she moves through a winter day.

She climbs back on the trampoline with her children, and she does not think about it at all. She laughs hard at the dinner table with her girlfriends, and sneezes through it, and thinks nothing of that either. That is the whole of what she came for. By winter, she has it back.
